China’s 'sponge city' concept can save cities from flooding


The Chinese government is creating sponge cities to capture and reuse at least 70% of the rainwater. Squishy structures, like storage tunnels, rain gardens, wetlands and bioswales, are being designed to store more water during heavy rainfalls to decrease the severity of floods, improve water quality, and reduce water waste. It will also improve air quality and reduce the urban heat island effect.
